Several devices on campus may contain lasers and may be designed by the manufacturer to be intrinsically safe. A device containing a laser that was introduced into commerce will have a hazard classification label stating which performance standard was used to classify it.
Class 1 laser products may have an embedded class 4 laser that is contained inside a protective housing. The laser is safe to use during normal operation but may be hazardous during servicing. In those cases where there is accessible laser radiation above the maximum permissible exposure limit a temporary laser control area must be established and a notification sign provided at the entrance to the control area. Contact EHS Laser Safety for specific guidance.
